Custom Technical Search
Search logic centered on the values buyers actually know — including part number, power output and frame size — so technical products can be found without browsing dozens of categories.
Case study
How Geocommerce structured a complex industrial catalogue around custom product search, a guided Motor Finder, technical metafields, and a Google Merchant Center feed built for specification-heavy products.

The challenge
Electric motor buyers often arrive with engineering requirements rather than a product name. Power, phase, RPM, frame size, efficiency, mounting and part number can all determine whether a motor is compatible.
The storefront needed to help experienced engineers move quickly while also guiding buyers who only knew part of the specification. Conventional keyword search and a flat collection structure would leave too much work to the customer.
The same technical data also needed to support collection filters, the Motor Finder, product specifications and a structured Google Merchant Center feed without duplicating catalogue work.
Our role
Geocommerce designed the Shopify product architecture around the way industrial buyers identify motors, then connected that structure to customer-facing discovery and external product feeds.
Search logic centered on the values buyers actually know — including part number, power output and frame size — so technical products can be found without browsing dozens of categories.
A step-by-step configurator narrows the catalogue through practical engineering questions, helping customers move from requirements to a suitable motor configuration.
Structured Shopify metafields organize power, horsepower, phase, pole/RPM, frame size, efficiency, mounting, voltage and motor type in reusable product data.
Technical attributes are exposed as collection filters so customers can progressively reduce a large catalogue to compatible products.
Structured Shopify data is transformed into a consistent Google Merchant Center feed, accounting for detailed product attributes and variant-level differences.
A single product-data model supports storefront search, filtering, product specifications and feed output, reducing duplicated catalogue maintenance.
Product data strategy
The project treats technical attributes as structured commerce data rather than descriptive copy, allowing the same values to drive multiple parts of the customer journey.
Search & Motor Finder
MM Engineering's catalogue lets buyers search using technical details such as part number, kW or frame size, while the guided Motor Finder provides a second path for customers who need help translating an application into a motor specification.
Customers can begin with a part number, power requirement or frame size instead of needing an exact product title.
Specification filters progressively reduce the catalogue using characteristics such as power, phase, RPM, frame and mounting.
The Motor Finder turns a technical purchasing decision into a sequence of manageable choices rather than exposing the full catalogue at once.
The journey moves customers toward a smaller, more relevant set of motors with technical specifications available for final validation.
Structured metafields keep key specifications consistent between discovery, collection cards and detailed product pages.
The underlying product model also supports Merchant Center output, reducing the gap between storefront data and advertising feeds.

Development approach
Instead of maintaining separate data for search, filters, product pages and advertising feeds, the build centralizes technical attributes in Shopify and reuses them across the commerce stack.
The result
MM Engineering now has a product-discovery framework that handles technical complexity without forcing that complexity onto the customer, while giving the catalogue a scalable data foundation for merchandising and acquisition.
Specification-led search and filtering help customers move from engineering requirements to relevant products more efficiently.
The Motor Finder creates an accessible path for customers who do not already know the exact motor or part number they need.
Structured metafields and feed logic give MM Engineering a reusable product-data foundation for storefront experiences and Google Merchant Center.
Selling technical products?
Geocommerce builds Shopify product discovery, data architecture and custom buying tools for catalogues where specifications matter as much as design.
